Liyam Chitayat

Liyam is a Hertz fellow and MIT PhD student in the Computational Systems Biology program. She is enamored by the lateral transfer of information between biological systems. In her PhD, she aims to understand and engineer the process of endosymbiosis to probe into the lateral transfer of mitochondria and other endosymbionts, following her research in her MSc on lateral gene transfer in bacteria. Liyam completed her Biomedical Engineering MSc and dual Major BSc in Chemistry and Biology at Tel Aviv University. She served as a Program Officer in the Israeli Ministry of Defense, managing environmental bio-engineering research.
