Fumi obtained his M.D. and Ph.D. in functional neurosurgery from Kyushu University, Japan. He then learned how to perform local field potential recording in movement disorder disease patients, and to do neural dynamics analysis, at the Institute of Neurology, London, and the University of Oxford, UK. Fumi worked on strategies for new scientific and clinical neurotechnology applications, at MIT, before starting as an associate professor at Osaka University Medical School.
